Road Riding

What is it ?
Road riding in Baku is restricted by poor road surfaces (although these are improving quickly) and the traffic (which isn’t). Most of the club cycling is out past the airport. The roads are quiet, the air is cleaner and the surface is decent.

However, there is limited variety and the roads are flat and exposed so when the wind blows, it can be very strong and unrelenting. Due to these limitations, the road group is smaller, typically 3 to 5 riders. However, it is often possible to ride the roads when the trails are unrideable due to mud.

When do we Ride ?
Generally early Saturday or Sunday mornings. In the winter we start around sunrise (7:30 – 7:45) and earlier in the summer, again to beat the heat. We ride for 2 to3 hours, although the route involves various loops so it is possible to split up and re-group or cut it short based on fitness.

Where is it ?
Head out towards the airport. On the last stretch of main road before the left turn into the airport, there is a green Az Petrol station on the right. (It is about 200 yards before the traffic lights that are next to the ‘Welcome to Baku’ sculpture). We park our vehicles on a piece of land opposite the petrol station (by a small brick building) and cycle from there. In the Baku Street Directory (2nd Edition), the parking area is on Map 38, ref P1 (it isn’t shown on the map but it is obvious when you get there).
